... were founded in 1962 as the Ronnie Drew Ballad Group, but soon renamed after the book of short stories (by James Joyce) that fellow founder member Luke Kelly was reading at the time.
Luke Kelly died in 1984, aged 44, after suffering from a number of health issues – some of which were said to be related to alcohol consumption and a "party lifestyle". Ronnie Drew died in 2008, aged 73, after a long illness.
